Orthodontics Treatment for Kids in Kelowna
It might seem young but it’s recommended that children have an initial orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. Why is 7 the magic number? It’s because by the age of 7, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually erupted and we’re able to evaluate issues, such as crossbites, crowding, breathing and swallowing patterns, thumb sucking habits and more.
Most of the time, treatment won’t be indicated and your child will join our awesome 7&Up Club. Dr. Scramstad will simply keep an eye on your kiddo’s growth and development and let you know when the time is right to start treatment. We make the process fun, stress-free and enjoyable for parents and kids alike. To schedule your child’s first orthodontic evaluation, book a consultation online or by calling us at 250-762-2824.
Early Orthodontic Treatment Procedures
In some cases, early orthodontic treatment is indicated. We use it to regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for the extraction of permanent teeth, reduce the likelihood of impacted teeth, correct thumb sucking and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems.
We start this early treatment with Phase 1 appliances, which are removed after the necessary corrections are achieved. We then let the teeth grow in naturally. Once the permanent teeth are in, your child can begin Phase 2 orthodontic treatment, or comprehensive orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign Teen, as required. Ultimately, early treatment can greatly simplify or help avoid treatment later.
What is the 7&Up Club at Straight Smiles?
If your child isn’t ready to start orthodontic treatment, they’ll get to join our 7&Up Club. As a member of our exclusive kids’ club, your child will come in for regular maintenance visits over the years. During these check-ups, Dr. Scramstad will monitor your child’s growth and take measurements, digital photos and digital x-rays, if necessary. This will allow him to pinpoint the ideal time for your child to begin orthodontic treatment in order to achieve the best possible results. Of course, as with any good club, as a 7&Up member, your child will also enjoy prizes, contests and fun!
