Say Goodbye to Jaw Pain
An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Living with TMJ pain can significantly disrupt your life — but relief is possible with Botox treatment. If you’re tired of the pain and headaches your TMJ disorder is causing, read on to discover how Botox can help.
What is TMJ?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, a sliding hinge-like joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. It can rotate and move forward, backward and side to side, making it one of the most complex joints in the body. Together with the muscles and ligaments in your face, the TMJ allows you to speak, swallow, chew and yawn. TMJ disorders (or TMDs) occur when there is an issue with the muscles or bones involved in the movement of the jaw.
TMDs can cause pain and tenderness in the ear, jaw joint, muscles of the jaw, temples or face. They can disrupt how you chew, speak or yawn, and are associated with neck pain and headaches. A variety of factors may contribute to TMDs, such as arthritis, clenching, grinding or stress.
Botox for TMJ Pain
Botox isn’t only useful for diminishing wrinkles and frown lines. It can also be a therapeutic treatment option to reduce TMJ discomfort and minimize the need for TMJ surgery. Botox is also proven to be effective at combating headaches, including chronic migraines. If you grind your teeth at night and find a mouth guard hard to wear, ask your dentist if Botox is right for you.
