FAQ: Getting Braces Off

When the time comes to have your braces removed, there may be a few questions you have for your Orthodontic provider.

At Straight Smiles, we understand that getting braces off is a cause for rejoice, but it’s important to remember everything we’ve told you throughout your braces journey. The information we’ve been telling you has been mentioned for a reason.

So, let’s refresh your memory.

In this article, we’ll discuss the braces removal process and what to remember once your braces are off. A simple FAQ on the braces removal process.

HOW DO THEY REMOVE BRACES?

Dr. James Scramstad of Straight Smiles removes braces by using special pliers to remove the brackets. He then removes the adhesive glue using a low or high speed dental handpiece.

Finally, Dr. Scramstad takes a digital scan of your new smile so your new retainer can be fabricated.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET BRACES OFF?

The process of taking the metal brackets off only lasts a couple minutes at most. The removal of the glue on your teeth and the digital scan are what takes the most time during your final braces removal process appointment.

DOES GETTING BRACES OFF HURT?

The process of getting your braces off is seemingly painless and it’s not something you should be worried about. Some teeth, especially the lower front teeth, may be more sensitive to pressure compared to others.

When Dr. Scramstad is squeezing the bracket, there may be temporary discomfort. But, don’t worry, he’s been doing this since 1996. This means that he can make sure his patients don’t experience pain.

WILL MY TEETH HURT AFTER GETTING BRACES OFF?

Once your braces are removed, it will feel strange. The teeth may be slightly sensitive for a couple of days, but there should be no pain. Just remember, your tongue hasn’t touched your teeth in awhile, so if you feel like your teeth feel weird or big, that’s very normal.

Your gums may also be sensitive once your braces are removed. This is normal and will subside within a few days with good brushing and flossing.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH RETAINERS?

After you have a digital scan of your teeth, you’re probably wondering what the deal with retainers are.

When Dr. Scramstad gives you a retainer, it’s not a joke. It’s meant to be worn overnight for 18-24 months. When you wear your retainer, it keeps your teeth from moving after getting your braces off.

You don’t want to get your braces off and then have your teeth move back. That would reverse all the hard work that your braces did. Wearing a retainer will make sure that doesn’t happen.

WILL THIS BE MY LAST APPOINTMENT WITH DR. SCRAMSTAD?

No, it won’t be your final appointment. While the braces removal process has happened, you will need to meet with Dr. Scramstad at least one more time.

During the final appointment, Dr. Scramstad will check your teeth to make sure your retainer is keeping your teeth aligned. If you wear your retainer every day, this final check-up will be a breeze!
