Dr. James Scramstad
Dr. James Scramstad continues the family tradition started by his father, Dr. Don Scramstad, who founded Straight Smiles in Kelowna in 1981 and practiced for 30 years. After graduating from OKM Secondary, James became a General Practitioner dentist with a focused interest in orthodontics.

Our Story

A Family Tradition
Straight Smiles was started in 1981 by Dr. James Scramstad’s father, Dr. Don Scramstad. When James saw how much joy his father got from building relationships with his patients and giving them healthier, straighter smiles, he was inspired to follow in his footsteps. The father-son duo worked side by side until Dr. Don Scramstad retired and James took the reigns.

Dr. Don Scramstad graduated from the University of Alberta.

Once Dr. Don received a telegram notice (pictured right) that he passed his dental board exams, he started practicing in Kelowna as one of the “original six” dentists in town.

Dr. Don took ownership of the Straight Smiles practice, kicking off decades of providing patients straight smiles.

While James was hard at work on his schooling, Nirvana released their iconic album Nevermind.

Dr. Don Scramstad graduated from the University of Alberta.

James, now officially Dr. James Scramstad, graduated from the University of Alberta Dental School with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and joined his father at Align as a General Practitioner dentist offering orthodontics only. They worked together for 17 years from 1996 to 2013!

This was a year of big changes for the Straight Smiles team! We moved to our brand new office on Harvey Avenue offering our patients a more convenient location and free parking. In an effort to incorporate the newest technology advances, we purchased our third iTero® digital scanner and added 3D printing, allowing us to provide our patients with the most modern, comfortable care.

Of three ortho consults, Dr. Scramstad was the only person that did not dismiss my... concerns as being too minor. The office incorporates digital technology that allows you to discuss outcomes before executing them. I was able to see how minute adjustments could ward off future gum recession. The technology has the added advantage of manipulating the bone the least amount possible. In my opinion, this method is superior to manual adjusting. INCREDIBLE!Let me start this review by letting potential clients know that I had... started an Invisalign treatment a DIFFERENT dentist office in town, but after 3 years of treatment (and although there was a noticeable improvement), this particular office was unable to correct problem areas of my teeth that weren't tracking. They said there was nothing they could do anymore, and it was my fault and my problem that my teeth weren't straightening properly. I paid a hefty bill to be indefinitely left at "mostly good".Before totally giving up, I decided to reach out to a few more dentist offices, one being Align Ortho with Dr. Scramstad. I did a free consultation, and before leaving, Dr. Scramstad was able to give me a very competitive rate and he was VERY confident they could fix the issue.I put full faith in his confidence and I am SO glad to have done so. Between the fact they keep up with the latest technology in orthodontics, and their impressive expertise, my teeth began tracking again (after years of problems!) and I was finally on the road to finishing a proper treatment.I can't express how truly grateful I am to have gotten a consultation from Dr. Scramstad. The entire office treats me like I am family when I walk through their door, they are informative and explain EVERY STEP of your treatment, and they work with you to get it DONE RIGHT. Awesome team and results!We had a great journey with Dr.Scramstad and his team. ... From the initial consultation, check in visits, braces on and follow up appointments it was a 3.5 year process.From beginning to end the experience was great as a parent and for my son who had to get braces. The whole team is very professional, accommodating and fun! They answered all my questions and explained how the process was going to work. My son's situation was difficult to begin with and then we had some setbacks (due to slow growing teeth). Regardless, Dr. Scramstad was very patient and addressed the setbacks and did not rush the process. He stuck to the plan and the outcome was exactly as he said it would be.Jen and Jennifer are wonderful and very competent. Alway there to help in an emergency situation (we had a few) and make each visit fun. Cathy is the best...returns phone calls, always has a smile and was very accommodating when booking our appointments.Overall I would highly recommend the Align Team. Dr. Scramstad and his team are phenomenal!As an adult I had some movement in my... teeth, and over time it was aesthetically unpleasing, and I was becoming more self conscious of my smile.My treatment plan was for both upper and lower Invisalign. Very early in the treatment plan I was seeing awesome results, with minimal to no discomfort. At this stage I'm mostly complete with my treatment, and incredibly happy with the outcome.On top of that, Dr. Scramstad and his team have been incredible during COVID. They're super thoughtful about ensuring the safety of their patients and staff. The office is super clean and there is minimal overlapping patient traffic.I could not recommend them more highly. Currently have braces from them. They are reasonably priced, there are no hidden... costs - very up front about the entire procedure. The visits to tighten are quick, no more than 15 minutes at a time. I would recommend them to anyone that needs teeth straightening.read more
